About this deal

Me dan ganas de comprar este libro en físico y arrancarle todas las páginas para hacer un mural con ellas en mi cuarto. For the summer while when the book takes place Juliet has traveled to Portland, Oregon to intern with a white, feminist author, Harlow Brisbane, who wrote a book about vaginas that inspired Juliet. Juliet is new and fresh eyed, open to possibilities of what it means to be a woman, a lesbian, and a person of color. I admit, I was extremely afraid at the beginning of this book, because I felt like the feminism that was described was only meant for white cis women, and I didn’t want to find this kind of bullshit in this book.

See, she’s going to intern with Harlowe Brisbane - her favorite feminist author, someone’s who’s the last work on feminism, self-love and lots of of ther things that will help Juliet find her ever elusive epiphany. This book examines white liberalism in general and hippies in particular, especially that of white womanhood and white feminism, and all of the contradictions that that entails. Talks about how womanhood is loving my pussy, folds within the inherent assumption that being a woman equals being a female. So, like, I’m free but your whole entire life has been gutted and everyone you know is either dead or indebted to some gringo corporation? All those aspects, while brief, due to the nature of this format, were so well done and surely very eye-opening for many people. And I loved Juliet, I loved how clueless she is about the LGBTQ community, about feminism, about herself, because we discover all these things with her.

As time goes on, Juliet becomes more comfortable within queer spaces but also learns that Harlowe Brisbane is not everything that she had hoped she would be and represent for her. I’d always done all of my homework, read all of the books assigned in school and yet, here was a world full of possibly iconic ladies I knew nothing about. Juliet Milagros Palante might be a fictional character but I would say she is the voice of a whole generation. First things first: I have not read the novel this book is based on, so I can't say anything about how well it is adapted. Intersectionality, feminism, race, and allyship: These topics came together a lot in this book, and I enjoyed how it was written.Gabby Rivera feels in control and educated on every subject that comes up - this is own voices, but still a part of me was worried the exclusionary aspects of Harlowe's feminism would never be addressed. I think because it was also so heavily reliant on New York slang, which I hear constantly in my day-to-day life but prefer not to read it because it’s extremely informal. She molds my little brother’s breakfast eggs into Ninja Turtles and pays all the bills in the house. On the other hand, I loved that she was fat, I loved that I could see that she was fat because it wasn't just my interpretation of the book - it was illustrated right there. Reading Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera was one of the most positive, transformative, illuminating experiences I’ve had this year.

From the beginning with a richly illustrated dinner scene where Juliet comes out, to her Miami trip where she visits her cousin and aunt, we see how much her family means to her. If you're queer and brown and still trying to figure out how to exist in this world, please read this book.Juliet Takes a Breath" Author Gabby Rivera On Inspiration, Queer Representation and Racism In Publishing". Juliet is a Latinx lesbian who has gotten the chance of her life, to intern with her role model for the summer, leaving the Bronx to Portland. would recommend if you want to gush about a graphic novel as much as i did in this review ( and more lmao ). After recently picking up Juliet Takes a Breath in novel form recently, I was so excited to hear that a graphic novel version was being released, so of course I jumped at the chance of reading an arc.
